Breast Lift

(Mastopexy) | Dr. Lina Triana

The breast lift (Mastopexy): repositions the bust, rejuvenates, enhances, and removes excess skin, restoring a more harmonious figure.

Over the years, breasts tend to become saggy and lose their position and texture. Pregnancy, hormones, age, and weight changes are some factors that cause our breasts to droop.

The Breast Lift (Mastopexy) can be combined with a breast augmentation, either with implants or with fat transfer.

For the breast lift procedure, I recommend that you have completed your reproductive cycle, since pregnancy or breastfeeding affect the appearance of the breasts, making them look more lax and saggy.

The breast lift is for you if...

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Am I a candidate for a Breast Lift?

If you have stretch marks or your breasts have sagged due to pregnancies, breastfeeding, or the passage of time, you are the ideal patient for a mastopexy or breast lift surgery. Every woman over 40 who wishes to have a breast lift must have a prior mammogram.

An incision is made that may go around your areola and/or also in the inframammary fold. With this incision, the excess skin is removed and the breast is lifted.
In some patients, a drain may be left in place, which will be removed according to each patient’s progress.

The surgery lasts 90 to 120 minutes and the anesthesia may be epidural combined with sedation, or general anesthesia.

Some women want not only a breast lift but also an augmentation. In these patients, in addition to the mastopexy, we can place breast implants. Breast implants can also help improve the cleavage after a breast lift.

When an implant is going to be placed during a breast lift procedure, after making the incision a pocket is created inside the breast where the implant is inserted. There are several positions where the implant can be placed: behind the muscle, behind the muscle’s fascia, and behind the mammary gland. I generally prefer to place the implant in the position behind the muscle. Breast fat grafting can also be performed together with a mastopexy; for this, the patient must first undergo a liposculpture to obtain the fat that will be injected into the breasts.

Today there are a great number of types, models, shapes, projections, and brands of implants. I generally work with Mentor brand silicone implants, but the ideal implant will be determined according to each individual case. There are also different fillers:

  • Saline implants: filled with sterile water.
  • Silicone implants: filled with silicone, which give a more natural consistency and are the most widely used today (cohesive gel).

After a mastopexy, it is advisable not to do any type of physical exertion (exercise) for approximately two months. Wearing a bra 24 hours a day is necessary until the healing period is complete.

In some cases, when breast implants are placed, an elastic band must be worn to help reduce swelling. For patients with silicone implants, postoperative ultrasounds are recommended to help reduce swelling.
